Tatyana Turko: “The future of Ukraine lies with active IDPs”

Tatyana Turko, a student, social activist and just beautiful, is exactly the person I want to say about — this is the future of Ukraine. In her young years, the girl had already managed to encounter what is called a “war”, and she knows firsthand how it is to be a internally displaced person. Tatyana would very much like that in our country there would be more of such “really” working, public organizations as “OP “Spilna sprava”, which, recently, is part of her life.

Before the outbreak of hostilities in eastern Ukraine, the talented Tatyana was a first-year student at the College of Music, where she was never destined to graduate. Indeed, the events of 2014 forced the Turko family to leave their hometown of Petrovskoye in the Luhansk region, and go to Vinnitsa to build a “new” life. But be that as it may, the girl did not want to lose her year of study, and Tatyana’s family was considering the possibility of her transfer to the College of Music in the city of Vinnitsa. But, unfortunately, at that time, there was no procedure for transferring students from temporarily occupied territories, therefore, Tatyana was given the choice: to enter the first year, having lost, thus, a year of study, or to finish the eleventh grade at school, pass the IEE and go to university. The girl chose the second option and, after graduating from school, entered the Donetsk National University named after V. Stus at the Faculty of History, international relations. Now, while studying at the magistracy, Tatyana works, in fact, by profession. More details later in the material.

Tatyana, tell me what brought you to the public sector, including the Public Organization “Spilna sprava”?

“I will say this, my parents always adhered to an active civic position, therefore they maintained relations with many public organizations, in some of them they were beneficiaries and, no matter what, took an active part in public life. As a child, all this, of course, did not interest me, but as a student, I began to delve into the political situation in our country. Every day, I was more and more concerned about this issue. I began to take part in various events organized by public organizations, and decided why I should not try, because, whatever one may say, this is the sphere of my future professional activity. ”

Tatyana Turko: “Once, I had practice in one of the public organizations, and the practice was, to put it mildly, not very positive. And when my father told me about the Public Organization “Spilna sprava”, I decided to first meet with her representatives and talk in order to know everything about her. I came to the public association “Spilna sprava”, and I saw that people are working and the work is actually being done, I was calm and already saw myself in the ranks of “Spilna sprava”. Now I know how it all works, I can already control a certain activity and, accordingly, be responsible for it. And there is hope that everything will change for the better. ”

Work with a Peace Corps volunteer, refugee and displaced person specialist

Tatyana Turko: “Being fluent in English, I decided to help our organization in this particular area of work, because international relations are an important component of overcoming various problem situations and solving many issues. This specialist really inspires me. You see, when a person is located next to a completely different mindset, this is truly, priceless. The volunteer shares her practice, which is very important for us, because all her life she has been dealing with issues of IDPs and refugees. And Ukraine, for me, in my opinion, is a unique case, because there is no such practice in other countries, they have a completely different attitude to this. Usually, people are settled in temporary camps, and then they find housing in the country, or they are sent to other countries. The situation never starts to drift, people are remembered, they are not abandoned until they are settled. But here, unfortunately, everything happens with accuracy, but vice versa.

Our public organization constantly holds various meetings and events, jointly with the Peace Corps volunteer, just one of these, Focus Group, is scheduled this Sunday. This helps to learn in more detail about «who has what hurts,» and what, in the end, we will do with all this.

“Public work cannot be carried out in any one direction, because, often, you have to be a psychologist, a lawyer, and just a free listener”

Tatyana Turko: “Now, we are working on a project to create classes of English and Polish. I hope that in two years of working with a volunteer from the Peace Corps, we will be able to improve our skills, learn from new experiences and learn to provide the necessary assistance even more and better ”.

“In my opinion, it is necessary to carry out active work with IDPs, organize meetings, events, so that they continue to be active. Because, from year to year, people lose hope and desire to do something. The most sore subject for most IDPs are housing issues. And he will have to fight very hard. Only thanks to our perseverance and perseverance can this goal be attainable ”
